Risa Journal According to Awi Suryadi
“Jurnal Risa is a children’s horror series that the whole family can enjoy,” answered Awi Suryadi.
What is the initial process of pre-production, production, and post-production preparation for the Risa Journal Series?
At first, Awi Suryadi knew that Risa had published a novel which told about her vacation with her cousins when she was little. From there, Awi Suryadi became interested because according to him, the novel was a piece of Risa’s life that had not been told in Danur Universe.

“During Danur 1, right, Risa was small, then Act 2, suddenly she’s so big. So, there’s a gap of 9 or 10 years. So, this Risa Journal Series is an event between those 10 year gap years.”
The total number of episodes in the Risa The Series Journal contains 10, and this makes Awi Suryadi feel challenged, especially entering production time.
This is because the shooting for Jurnal Risa The Series was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic, plus Awi Suryadi had not directed any works in 2 years. After working on the Risa The Series Journal, Awi Suryadi did not expect that the challenge he was expecting was bigger than what he had anticipated.
“The location is also difficult, outdoor, forest, bridge, cave, the cast is also children. I thought 5 or 6, apparently there are a lot. Children’s ghosts, children’s enemies and more. Super chaotic, but still fun. As for the post production, it’s quite smooth, because we’ve already designed quite a shooting list. We had additional shooting because we felt that we could shoot again and there was still time before it aired,” added Awi Suryadi.

When Awi Suryadi was asked to work on Danur 1, he was still confused about what to do with Risa Saraswati’s novel. Awi also discussed with Manoj Punjabi as CEO of MD Entertainment.

Awi said he wanted to turn the Risa Journal series into a horror genre, but for all ages. “My friends are ghost children, cast are children, so I said how about we make a horror film for all ages and families,” said Awi Suryadi.
Indeed, from the start, Danur Universe has reaped its success. After that, the film Ivanna was not directed by Awi Suryadi, so when Awi was asked to work on the web series version of Jurnal Risa again, he brought another direction that was family friendly.
Awi Suryadi’s Experience Directing Children’s Cast
To be honest, Awi Suryadi was surprised because it turned out that Danur 1 to 3, which also had many child casts, had not prepared himself enough to face the child cast again.
“There are more casts, 12 or 13. And there are almost 7 children who stand by every day. So, it takes patience, but we have chosen the cast who have good acting skills. Also maintaining their focus is rather difficult, but we always keep it friendly, keep it fun,” said Awi Suryadi.

“It’s in episode 3 or 4. That’s the introduction of a Dutch ghost again. The set is in the basement. Interesting. The scene is quite unique. It’s not just jumpscare, between a bit cute and a bit scary. So, yeah, watch out!” said Awi Suryadi.

According to Awi Suryadi, initially, Risa Saraswati thought that her ability to be sensitive to spirits was a weakness and she really hated it. In fact, Risa was shunned by her cousin and found it difficult to make friends.
