Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – There are several new names on the Forbes 2022 list of richest people. One of those new names is Manoj Punjabi, who sits at No. 43 with a net worth of US$1.05 billion, equivalent to Rp.16.43 trillion, from MD Pictures.
Based on data from Forbes, this Indian-blooded man has successfully ranked 43rd on the 50 richest people in Indonesia thanks to MD Pictures’ shares which have jumped almost fourfold in the past year. Plus, with people flocking to cinemas to watch movies after closing cinemas for more than a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the third quarter of 2022, MD Pictures posted revenue that more than doubled to US$24 million or the equivalent of Rp.382 billion compared to the same period last year.
Punjabi is recorded as holding the majority stake in MD Pictures through its parent company, namely MD Global Investments. MD took the floor on the stock exchange in 2018.
Manoj Punjabi was born on December 7, 1972 in Jakarta. He had studied at the Gandhi Memorial School in Jakarta. After graduation, he has the desire to continue his education in film. However, his family opposed this because of career reasons and the not-so-good condition of Indonesian filmmaking.
Having been opposed, Manoj also worked in a pulp and paper industry. But he only lasted 3 months there and was fired at a later date.
Starting his career in cinema, Manoj served as managing producer at his uncle’s Multivision Plus production house, Ram Punjabi and Gobind Punjabi. His father, Dhamoo Punjabi also serves as an executive producer in the company.
In 2001, Manoj and his father decided to leave Multivision Plus due to differences in vision and mission. He later founded MD Entertainment on March 6, 2003 with his father.
The name MD itself was inspired by its two founders, Manoj and Dhamoo. One of the successful soap operas from his cold hands is Cinta Fitri. This soap opera brought MD to achieve well-known awards such as the Panasonic Awards, SCTV Awards, Indonesian Movie Awards, Yahoo OMG Awards and others. This award was won by Manoj in just 10 years.
Expansion into film, Manoj then founded PT Multi Dimensia Corpora (MD Corporation) which then oversees MD Entertainment which focuses on television entertainment, MD Pictures which focuses on the big screen, MD Music and MD Animation.
With the spirit of developing the Indonesian film industry, Manoj has produced various well-known Indonesian film titles which have been successful in turning into quality films and producing high number of viewers. As for several film titles that were successfully worked on by Manoj, including Ayat-Ayat Cinta, Habibie & Ainun, Heaven that is Not Missed, Rudy Habibie, Danur: I Can See Ghosts, to KKN in the Dancer Village.
